GRAMMAR
Skimming and scanning are very important reading techniques. In short, skimming refers to looking through material quickly to gather a general sense of the ideas, information, or topic itself. When you skim, you read through an article three to four times faster than when you read each word. Scanning refers to reading through material to find specific information. When you scan, you run your eyes over text or information to pull out specific words, phrases, or data.
SKIMMING
WHY DO IT: to quickly assess the value of the article and determine if it is worth your time and energy to spend any more time with it.
HOW TO DO IT:
1.                 Read the title
2.                 Read the introduction
3.                 Read all the subheadings and think about how they are related to one another and to the title
4.                 Read the first sentence in each paragraph. You may also need to read the last sentence in each paragraph depending on the style of writing.
5.                 Go back through the text looking for clues as to content and importance. Such clues include: words that answer who, what, when where, why and how, proper nouns, numbers, adjectives such as best, worst, most, least, etc, changes in font such as italics, underlining, boldface, etc
6.                 Read the last paragraph

After skimming you should be able to know the general ideas of what the article is about and be able to determine if it fits your needs or not. If not, let it go. You’re done. Move on to the next article.
SCANNING

WHY DO IT: to find a specific fact or piece of information that you need for something else.
HOW TO DO IT:
1.                 Remember what it is you are looking for so you will not be distracted by other pieces of information
2.                 Anticipate how the information looks – is it identified by numbers, italics, proper nouns, etc.
3.                 Run your eyes over several lines at one time
4.                 When you find the information you are looking for, focus your eyes and attention there and read the entire sentence. You may also need to read the sentence before and after as well.

When you understand what skimming and scanning are and how to use these techniques, you can manage a large amount of text in a relatively short amount of time. Skimming and scanning skills allow you to use your time both efficiently and effectively.

LIE DETECTOR

A new form of lie detector that works with voice analysis and may be used without the knowledge of the subject is introduced in Britain. Analysts Detector the mental pressure (ESP) is used by private industry for pre-employment screening, investigating the burglary and regular evaluation of staff. The PSE works by examining the components of this infrasonic FM. Detector claimed that the tightening of the muscles occurs very quickly, and can change from one word, so that it is possible to choose a word or phrase that causes stress. In the United States (U.S.), the device is used for pre-employment interview, with questions like 'Are you using marijuana?' And for monthly checks with the branch manager, to ask questions like 'you suspect any fraudulent company employees present?' at least prevent the manager from setting their own speed to investigate the suspicious behaviour that may be. Resistance to using it is that the most serious problem is that the main application is in a situation where people do not matter - such as pre-employment interview. PSE can be used without the subject knowing, the author's analysis of the Watergate hearings on television and told the media that they thought existed.

What are the common mistakes that you always do in writing? Do you find writing is difficult? What kind of problem do you face when you start writing? What are you suggestions to overcome the problem? Discuss.
In my opinion, the most common mistake that I usually do is my introduction of the story and then continuing it to the next supporting sentence. I often don’t realize that I am adding up sentences that has no relation with the topic sentence.  Despite of this mistake that I always do, writing in English is no big deal for me. Writing in English is one thing, but writing it accordingly to the marking scheme is another. Generating ideas is the biggest problem for me, there are just so many ideas that flow and the thought gets blocked up. In the end, I have nothing to write on my paper. My suggestion for this problem is to concentrate on the major ideas and sticking it to the topic sentence. This way, the writing is done neatly with the contents stacked consistent with the topic.

task 5

(Writing process about water pollution)
Topic: Water Pollution

Topic Sentences: Nowadays, much pollution that happened in our place for example, water pollution and this pollution gives many negative impact to the place and people around our place.

Supporting Details: 1. cause a lot of aquatic life to the dead
                                    2. Cause the river and the sea is dirty
                                    3. The splendor of the river has been lost

Concluding Details: In conclusion, water pollution must be avoided so that the splendor of the river and sea will return as before the pollution.
Nowadays, much pollution that happened in our place for example, water pollution and this pollution give many negative impacts to the place and people around our place. The first negative impact of the water pollution is cause a lot of aquatic life to die. Water pollution not only happens in sea but also happen in the river. Besides, river and sea became the trash disposal. A lot of aquatic died because of the rubbish. The aquatic cannot breath when many of rubbish around the space and in the water. Then, the pollution also causes the river and the sea is dirty. All the rubbish that people throw in the river and the sea are gathered in a place then because the aquatic cannot breath and cannot get the sun light. The sun light is very important to all that live in this world.

GRAMMAR
TOPIC SENTENCE

The topic sentence states the main idea of the paragraph. There are many ways in which one can do this.
Some possible techniques include: definition, analysis, statistics, comparison and contrast, and cause and effect.
The topic sentence needs to be the most general sentence of the paragraph. Meaning that it doesn't need to have too much detail of too much "fluff." The following sentences will then expand on the topic sentence. However, one does need to establish the point of the paragraph so that the reader can get a good idea of what the paragraph will include, just from the topic sentence.

SUPPORTING SENTENCES

Supporting details are also referred to as the body of the paragraph. They are called "supporting" sentences because they "support," or explain the ideas in the topic sentence. After a reader reads the topic sentence, a question should appear in the reader's mind.
For instance, take this topic sentence: "Mrs. Simmons is the best teacher I have ever had." The reader should then ask, "Why is she the best teacher you have ever had?" or "How is she different from other teachers?" The supporting sentences should then attempt to answer the reader's question.

CONCLUDING SENTENCES

You can think of the concluding sentence as the opposite of the topic sentence.
The conclusion sentence of a paragraph is not just a restatement of the topic sentence. It sets up the main thought or idea of the following paragraph. This transition sentence can be continued and explained on into the topic sentence of the following paragraph.

State the topic of the paragraph identifies the controlling ideas and expresses the writer's attitude about the topic. Write without worrying about the error because it is a good start. The third step is to revising all your draft. You can improve the focus, content, and organisation it.
